Facial paralysis
What is it?
Facial paralysis is the inability to move the muscles of the face. Eyes may be affected by paralysis of the orbicularis muscle, which is responsible for closing the eyelids. These disease may lead to:
- Lagoftalmos, que a su vez puede provocar una úlcera corneal por exposición
- Ectropión
- Epífora (ojo lloroso)
Causes
Approximately half of facial paralyses are of unknown origin. The most frequent causes include:
- Traumatismos o accidentes
- Tumores
- Infecciones
- Enfermedades neurológicas
- Postquirúrgicas: cirugía de oído, de glándula parótida, etc.
Symptoms
Inability to move the face and/or to close the eyelid
Red eye and tearing

Treatment
Surgery is sometimes necessary in order for the eyelid to protect the ocular surface. The most common types of such surgery are:
- Cantoplastia
- Colocación de peso de oro y platino
- Lifting mediofacial transconjuntival
